The Morning

The morning my mom
forgot who I was
or who she was
was that cornflower
blue you see sometimes
here in September
when the desert shifts
from night into dawn,
the streets still empty
as I drove her through
blinking red lights
to the hospital.
I sat alone there
waiting to hear what
pieces would be left
us, the coke I drank
so cold it sent a
spike through my head.
